Rev. Maxwell Buddie warns against pretence in relationships

Rev. Maxwell Buddie warns against pretence in relationships
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Reverend Maxwell Buddie has cautioned individuals against entering romantic relationships or marriages under false pretences, warning that deception and deliberate ignorance of red flags can eventually destroy relationships.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme Nyansapɔ Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Rev. Buddie said some people deliberately hide their true personalities and intentions during courtship in an attempt to secure relationships, social status or material benefits.

According to him, individuals may sometimes present themselves as people they are not simply to gain approval from a prospective partner or position themselves for financial security.

Rev. Buddie explained that such behaviour creates a false foundation for the relationship because the other partner eventually discovers that the person they committed to is significantly different from the individual they knew during courtship.

He, however, noted that the responsibility does not lie only with the person who engages in deception.

He said some individuals knowingly ignore obvious warning signs and troubling character traits during courtship because they believe their partners will eventually change after marriage.

Rev. Buddie cautioned against the mindset that marriage or the passage of time can automatically transform a person’s character.

He said ignoring serious red flags in the hope that a partner will change could result in disappointment, mistrust, anxiety and, ultimately, the breakdown of the relationship.

According to him, a relationship built around pretence cannot provide the stability and intimacy required for a healthy and lasting marriage.

Rev. Buddie therefore urged couples and prospective partners to prioritise honesty and authenticity from the beginning of their relationships.

He encouraged individuals to be vulnerable enough to reveal their true selves during courtship and to accept their partners based on who they genuinely are, rather than attempting to change them into their preferred version.

He stressed that relationships built on trust, honesty, mutual understanding and genuine love are more likely to withstand the challenges that come with long-term commitment.
