A 2025 interview featuring former Tema East Member of Parliament (MP), Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has resurfaced following the sentencing of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In the interview, Titus Glover, who also served as the Greater Accra Regional Minister, commented on Chairman Wontumi’s legal troubles after his arrest at the time.
He alleged that the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo deliberately chose not to prosecute certain individuals, including some Members of Parliament accused of receiving double salaries and businessman Ibrahim Mahama.
According to Glover, several MPs who allegedly received double salaries while serving in government were spared prosecution after senior members of the NPP appealed to former President Akufo-Addo to exercise restraint in the interest of national peace and democratic stability.
“I was in Parliament for two terms. Haruna Iddrisu, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Armah Kofi Buah… there were MPs who were taking double salaries.

“I know for a fact that when the government wanted to prosecute them, our own MPs in leadership had to go and plead on their behalf with the President. They said, Please, you know how democratic you are. Leave them. President Akufo-Addo agreed for the sake of peace and sanity in this country,” he said.
He further claimed that Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of President John Dramani Mahama, was also not prosecuted after allegedly issuing cheques that were dishonoured after he had cleared goods from the port.
Glover said the Akufo-Addo administration instead allowed him to settle the outstanding debt rather than pursuing criminal charges.
“When Ibrahim Mahama signed those cheques, he issued them after clearing his goods at the port, and the cheques were dishonoured. That alone should have landed him before a court.
“When we came to power, we said, No, he is a businessman, so let him make arrangements and settle whatever debt he owes. Why didn’t we send Ibrahim Mahama to EOCO?
“Why didn’t we hand him over to the police? We all live together, and we must build this country together,” he added.
Chairman Wontumi has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment after the Criminal Court 4 Division of the High Court found him guilty on all six counts brought against him.
In a judgment delivered on Monday, July 20, 2026, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay ordered that the prison terms run concurrently. The court also fined Wontumi 10,000 penalty units on each of the six counts.
Akonta Mining Limited, which was also convicted on two counts, was fined 15,000 penalty units for each count.
The convictions were secured under the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2020 (Act 995), which prescribes stiffer penalties for illegal mining-related offences.
Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining Limited, and a third accused person, Kwame Antwi, were prosecuted over alleged illegal mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
According to the prosecution, the accused unlawfully assigned mineral rights on the concession without the approval of the sector minister and facilitated mining activities without the required authorisation, contrary to the provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act.
