Remove taxes on sanitary pads – Queen Mother appeals to gov’t
The queen mother of Ekumfi Swedru in the Ekumfi district, Nana Adwoa Enyinfuaa III has appealed to the government to as a matter of urgency remove taxes on sanitary pads to make them more affordable for all especially school girls and those in the deprived areas.
Speaking with the queen mother on EBAANOSEN on Plan B FM late afternoon, she noted that menstrual insecurity affects women and girls, it has been a situation that is very worrying and must be looked at critically by the government.
“At first we (Queen mothers) use to buy some pad at Ghs 200 and share it among the school girls but now we can’t buy some anymore due to the high price it is now Ghs 500, Nana Adwoa Enyinfuaa III appealed to the government to reduce the taxes on sanitary pads or abolish it to enable parents to buy for their girls”
She also urged parents to take responsibility for buying sanitary pads for their girls to avoid teenage pregnancy because men could easily lure them if they lack such support from parents and guidance.
She also advised the girls to concentrate on their education instead of following men who give them few cedis and impregnate them in the end.
Nana Adwoa Enyinfuaa III pleaded with the men who take an advantage of young girls when they offer them help.
“It’s good to help the needy, especially the girls from your good heart but not to take an advantage of their inabilities”.
