A public health nurse, Betty Ackon, has advised parents to educate their teenage children on sex education and proper menstrual hygiene, particularly young girls, to help prevent teenage pregnancies.
Speaking on Nyansapo Fie, a lifestyle programme on Plan B FM hosted by Akosua Mireku, she described the growing rate of teenage pregnancy as alarming and called for stronger parental guidance and supervision.
According to her, parents must counsel and engage their wards regularly to discourage them from engaging in premarital sex, which could negatively affect their future ambitions and education.
She further urged parents to provide adequate care and support for their children, especially girls, noting that some teenagers become vulnerable when they lack basic necessities and are forced to depend on boys for money and other needs.
Betty Ackon also appealed to schools to improve sanitation and provide proper toilet facilities to support girls during their menstrual periods. She explained that access to clean and safe washrooms would help protect young girls from infections and promote good menstrual hygiene.
