The Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) has announced a nationwide strike effective Monday, October 21, 2024.
The industrial action by PSWU is due to the failure of the Ministry of Finance to pay allowances of members on the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPS) structure.
According to the leadership of PSWU, the incumbent government has failed to fulfil its promise of using SSPS to address public sector workers’ conditions and to prevent agitations and frequent strikes.
The union further explained that many of its members have been short-changed since the implementation of the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPS) 10 years ago.
It will be recalled that in 2022, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo tasked the National Tripartite Committee to review the Single Spine Pay Policy and advise the government on the policy accordingly.
“The goal is to find out whether the Single Spine Pay Policy is living up to expectations and, if not, find a way forward. I hope that the report, which is expected to be ready in July, will help to put an end to most of the unrest we see on the labour front involving public sector workers,” the President noted.
The President further urged all government employees “to work hard to increase productivity so we can increase salary levels, and provide the basis for paying a ‘Living Wage’”.
