Prestea Government Hospital mortuary has suffered yet another setback after thieves vandalised the facility, stealing electrical cables and copper components, according to citnewsroom.com report.
According to the report, the break-in occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, when vandals removed cables connecting the mortuary to the national grid and stripped copper coils from its refrigeration system.
Although completed around five years ago, the mortuary has still not been put into use.
Dr Otoo Acheampong, the hospital’s caretaker, described the incident as part of a recurring pattern of theft at the facility.
“These repeated thefts are delaying the commissioning of the mortuary, which was built to replace the old and overstretched one,” citinewsroom.com quoted Dr Acheampong to have said.
Michael Koomson, a hospital technician who responded to the incident, said he received a distress call around 1 a.m. reporting a power outage at the mortuary.
“When I arrived, the main hospital had power, but the mortuary building was completely dark,” he explained.
Upon inspection at daybreak, Koomson traced the fault to vandalised cables hidden in a nearby bush.
“About 100 metres of 16mm electrical cable had been cut and removed,” he said.
He attributed the recurring thefts to the mortuary’s isolated location and the lack of dedicated security, as the hospital currently has only one guard stationed at the main gate.
