Commuters traveling along the busy Pokuase–Nsawam Road experienced a chaotic start to their day after a fuel tanker transporting petroleum products overturned in the early hours of today, spilling large quantities of fuel onto the highway and triggering severe traffic congestion.
The incident reportedly occurred during the early morning hours when vehicular movement was gradually increasing. Witnesses say the tanker suddenly lost balance and toppled onto its side, causing fuel to gush onto sections of the road. Within minutes, the highway became a dangerous stretch as the spilled fuel spread across lanes used by incoming vehicles.
Drivers approaching the scene were forced to slow down significantly while others brought their vehicles to a complete halt, fearing the possibility of a fire outbreak. Fuel spills on highways are considered extremely hazardous because even a small spark from a vehicle engine or cigarette could ignite the flammable liquid.
The accident quickly created a long queue of vehicles stretching several meters as motorists struggled to navigate the affected section of the road. Commercial drivers, private car owners, and public transport operators all found themselves caught in the gridlock as traffic built up rapidly during the morning rush.
Emergency responders and traffic management officers were alerted shortly after the incident occurred. Upon arrival, they began directing vehicles away from the most dangerous sections while working to secure the area and reduce the risk of ignition.
Authorities also moved to temporarily restrict movement near the tanker while efforts were made to contain the spill and prevent further danger to road users and nearby residents.
Although the full cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed, preliminary observations suggest that the tanker may have lost control before overturning. Investigators are expected to examine the scene to determine whether factors such as mechanical failure, driver error, or road conditions contributed to the incident.
Fortunately, there have been no confirmed reports of fatalities linked to the accident so far. However, the situation has caused major disruptions to commuters who rely on the Pokuase–Nsawam corridor for daily travel.
Officials have urged motorists to remain patient and exercise caution as cleanup operations continue to restore normal traffic flow on the highway.
