OSP confirms INTERPOL deletes red notice against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta

Special Prosecutor Commences Probe Into Financial Sector Crisis

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially confirmed that the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has removed the Red Notice previously associated with Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s former Minister of Finance. The announcement marks a major development in the high-profile case that has drawn significant public attention both locally and internationally.

In a statement issued by the OSP, it was revealed that INTERPOL’s decision followed a formal review process, which led to the deletion of the notice from its global database. A Red Notice is typically used as an international alert requesting law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest an individual pending extradition. Its removal means that the alert is no longer active and that Ofori-Atta’s name is no longer listed in INTERPOL’s system.

The OSP explained that the deletion was carried out in line with international legal procedures and due process, reinforcing the principle that such notices are subject to review, oversight, and compliance with global legal standards. Although specific technical reasons for the removal were not fully disclosed, the statement emphasized that INTERPOL’s internal mechanisms and legal frameworks guide all decisions relating to Red Notices.

The development has sparked renewed public debate in Ghana, particularly around issues of accountability, transparency, and international legal cooperation. As a former finance minister, Ofori-Atta remains a highly influential public figure, and any legal or investigative action connected to him naturally attracts widespread national interest.

Legal analysts note that the removal of a Red Notice does not necessarily equate to the conclusion of all legal matters connected to a case. Instead, it reflects INTERPOL’s independent review process and its strict rules governing the issuance and maintenance of such notices. INTERPOL itself maintains that Red Notices are not international arrest warrants but are alerts shared with member states, subject to legal and procedural safeguards.

The OSP’s confirmation underscores the complexity of cross-border legal processes, especially when high-profile political figures are involved. It also highlights the role of international institutions in ensuring that global law enforcement cooperation operates within clearly defined legal boundaries.

As reactions continue to emerge from political actors, civil society groups, and the general public, the case remains a focal point in discussions about governance, justice, and institutional accountability in Ghana. Observers will be watching closely to see what next steps, if any, Ghanaian authorities take following INTERPOL’s decision.

For now, the deletion of the Red Notice represents a significant turning point in the case, reinforcing the importance of due process, international legal standards, and transparent communication between national and global law enforcement bodies.
