Mr. Matthew Kitcher, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on political leaders to stop politicising Ghana’s sanitation challenges and focus on delivering sustainable solutions.
Speaking on Ebaanosen on Plan B FM with host Adomba De-Starboy, Mr. Kitcher noted that the Operation Clean Your Frontage initiative did not originate under the current administration but has been implemented by successive governments over the years.
According to him, sanitation has repeatedly become a campaign issue, with political parties often blaming one another for the country’s poor environmental conditions instead of addressing the root causes.
He observed that both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have, at various times, pledged to improve sanitation, yet the same challenges continue to persist.
Mr. Kitcher questioned the effectiveness of the Operation Clean Your Frontage campaign, arguing that the initiative is relaunched almost every year without producing visible or lasting results. He therefore called on the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, to provide a clear account of the campaign’s achievements and ensure that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) take sanitation enforcement seriously.
He stressed that Ghana has collectively failed in addressing its sanitation problems, pointing out that every government has had the opportunity to tackle the issue but none has achieved lasting success.
Mr. Kitcher further argued that governance is a continuous process in which every administration inherits existing challenges. As such, he said leaders must prioritise finding permanent solutions rather than engaging in blame games.
He concluded by urging political leaders to place the national interest above partisan considerations, stressing that Ghana’s development depends on leaders who can look beyond political differences and work together to implement sustainable policies that benefit the country regardless of which party is in power.
