The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to commence a nationwide meter audit exercise across all its operational areas to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue assurance and combat electricity theft.
In a public announcement, ECG said the exercise would involve the inspection and verification of prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring to ensure the integrity of metering systems and the accurate measurement and billing of electricity consumption.
The company has also cautioned customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel against denying, restricting or delaying access to authorised ECG personnel on the grounds that they have not received a separate notification letter.
According to ECG, the announcement serves as official notice of the exercise, and no additional prior notices, appointment letters or advance notifications will be issued.
The company cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to grant utility employees or authorised agents safe and reasonable access to their premises, subject to the production of verifiable identification and compliance with the utility’s customer charter procedures.
ECG assured the public that all employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise would carry official identification cards.
Customers have been advised to verify the identity of field personnel before granting them access by calling the ECG Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or using the *226# USSD verification service available on all mobile networks.
To verify an officer through the USSD service, customers should dial *226#, select Option 5 for staff verification, enter the six-digit verification code provided by the officer and confirm that the displayed name, region and district match the person at their premises.
