A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, Richard Anning, has alleged that the current challenges in Ghana’s energy sector are being deliberately orchestrated to justify new power purchase agreements for personal gain.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Anning claimed the recurring power crisis is part of a broader “create, loot and share” agenda aimed at exploiting the state through questionable deals in the energy sector.
According to him, some officials are intentionally allowing the situation to deteriorate in order to create grounds for the signing of new power purchasing agreements, which he described as avenues for corruption and financial mismanagement.
Mr. Anning referenced events during President John Dramani Mahama’s first administration in 2015, alleging that government entered into what he termed “dubious” and “corrupt” power agreements that later contributed to huge financial obligations and judgment debts against the state.
He also accused the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, of dishonesty over the controversy surrounding missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers last year.
According to Mr. Anning, the minister had publicly indicated that authorities knew the whereabouts of the missing containers and would retrieve them, but no concrete action was taken afterward.
He described the development as misleading and accused the minister of failing to deliver on assurances given to the public regarding the matter.
The allegations add to growing political exchanges between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition NPP over the state of Ghana’s energy sector and the return of intermittent power outages, popularly referred to as dumsor.
