A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team in the Tema West Constituency, James Tamakloe, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of exploiting the LGBTQ debate for political gain while failing to take decisive action since assuming office.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem on Plan B FM, Tamakloe claimed the NDC previously used the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill—popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill as a campaign tool against the NPP during the 2024 general elections. He alleged that the party blamed former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for allegedly dragging his feet over the bill by not assenting to it.
According to him, the NDC has now been in government for over a year but has yet to pass the bill, raising questions about its commitment to the cause it once championed.
“They should stop the blame game and pass the bill,” Tamakloe stated, urging the governing party to move beyond political accusations and act decisively.
His comments come in the wake of a directive by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, instructing the Business Committee to schedule the reintroduction and consideration of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. The Speaker has maintained that the bill does not contravene any provision of the 1992 Constitution.
Speaker Bagbin further noted that reconsidering the bill would not amount to a waste of state financial resources, clearing the way for Parliament to resume deliberations on the matter.
The anti-LGBTQ bill has remained one of the most polarising legislative issues in Ghana’s recent political history, attracting intense debate locally and internationally over human rights, cultural values, and constitutional interpretation.
