Nii Afottey Anokwafo II, Divisional Chief of Atseregonno in the Nungua Traditional Council in the Greater Accra Region, has disclosed that the Nungua Traditional Council, in collaboration with the local council of churches and all eight clan houses, has implemented a ban on extravagant funerals in the area.
Speaking in an interview with Odiamono Kwaku Gyimah on Plan B FM’s Nyamesom Mmerɛ programme, he said, “We have opted for more modest refreshments at funerals, such as serving biscuits and soft drinks, rather than elaborate and costly displays.”
“Additionally, we have prohibited the wearing of new ceremonial attire for funerals and brass band performances. Anyone who fails to comply with these rules will face reprimand,” he stated.
Nii Afottey Anokwafo II emphasised the importance of prioritising investments in children’s education over excessive funeral spending, saying, “We need to invest in our children’s education and other essential areas, rather than spending excessively on funerals.”
He also highlighted the significance of maintaining good hygiene practices after attending funerals, noting that cleansing one’s hands with herbs and water or soap and water is beneficial for both physical and spiritual well-being.
