A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Sam Anoom, has defended the government’s decision to undertake a new nationwide SIM card registration exercise, stating that the process will help eliminate fraud and reduce the stress experienced during the previous registration exercise.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s “Nkosuo Nsem” programme, hosted by Kofi Sekyi in Tema Central, Mr. Anoom assured the public that the new registration process will be different from the earlier one, which was criticised for long queues and operational challenges.
According to him, measures are being put in place to ensure that the exercise runs smoothly and efficiently, adding that Ghanaians will not experience the long queues that characterised the previous SIM re-registration exercise.
His comments follow an announcement by the Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, that Cabinet has approved a completely new SIM registration exercise after an extensive review of the earlier process.
The Minister explained that the previous registration exercise faced several challenges, including weak biometric enforcement, data inconsistencies and instances of registration fraud.
Mr. George made the disclosure during high-level discussions with the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the National Communications Authority, where stakeholders also discussed the planned SIM registration exercise and the roadmap for the rollout of 5G technology in Ghana.
He emphasised that the upcoming exercise will not be a continuation of the previous system but rather a complete reset aimed at restoring credibility and strengthening security within the SIM registration process.
Mr. Anoom therefore urged the public to support the new initiative, expressing confidence that the improved system will make the registration process more efficient while helping authorities clamp down on SIM-related fraud.
