National Cathedral Audit Report Expected In Three Weeks – Attorney-General

‘You are even more conflicted’ – Ayine ‘faces-off’ with Osei-Asare over cost of BoG HQ

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, says the forensic audit report on the National Cathedral project is expected to be ready within three weeks.

According to him, the findings of the audit will inform the government’s next line of action regarding the possible termination of contracts with the National Cathedral Secretariat.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, October 22, Dr. Ayine said the audit was progressing steadily and would guide all subsequent legal decisions.

“We gave them eight weeks. I think we’ve done about five weeks now. They may ask for an extension. Okay, so maybe in three weeks we’ll get a forensic audit report. It is at that point in time that I will decide, you know, how to terminate. Okay, because in every contract there is a basis for termination,” he said.

Earlier in July, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced that President John Dramani Mahama had directed the Attorney-General to initiate a forensic audit into the National Cathedral Project and the activities of its Secretariat.

At a press briefing at the Jubilee House on July 18, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said the Attorney-General was also taking steps to lawfully terminate the existing contracts to prevent further financial losses to the state.

The directive followed revelations from a Deloitte audit report, which uncovered significant financial irregularities in the execution of the project.

Public pressure has since mounted for transparency and accountability in the management of funds allocated to the stalled National Cathedral project.
