The Korley Klottey Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Mr. Hendrick Kinnah, has urged Ghanaians to maintain clean surroundings and properly manage waste to help prevent flooding as the rainy season intensifies.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Kinnah advised citizens to desist from dumping refuse into gutters, stressing that poor sanitation practices continue to worsen flooding situations across the country.
According to him, indiscriminate disposal of waste, especially plastics and rubber materials, has contributed significantly to environmental degradation and climate change, leading to avoidable flooding incidents.
He also called on waste management companies accredited to handle sanitation in various assemblies to discharge their duties effectively, while urging Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to properly supervise such companies to ensure efficient waste management.
Mr. Kinnah further appealed to the public to dispose of polythene bags, plastics and other waste materials responsibly and remain alert during the rainy season by avoiding activities that could trigger flooding.
He warned that more rains are expected in the coming days and weeks and encouraged residents to take precautionary measures to stay safe.
The NADMO Coordinator also expressed concern over the poor state of drainage systems in many parts of the country, describing them as a major cause of flooding during heavy rains.
Touching on recent flooding incidents, he stated that no casualties had been recorded so far.
Mr. Kinnah additionally advised travelers who patronize roadside vehicle stations to remain vigilant and seek shelter whenever there are signs of heavy rainfall to avoid possible dangers.
