Four people, including a mother and her two children, were on Saturday killed in an accident in Odeomu, Osun State.
It was learnt that the victims, including the rider, were on a motorcycle when a car heading towards Ibadan from the Osogbo end of the road rammed into them at 6 am.
The occupants of the vehicle involved were said to be students of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.
A resident of Odeomu, who wanted to be identified as Fatai but claimed to have witnessed the incident, said the car involved was travelling at top speed when it hit the victims who were returning from a vigil.
The victims were said to be going to Oogi, a neighboring community, when the car coming from the opposite direction lost control around Obada market and hit the motorcycle carrying them.
Another resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, said the car involved ran into a bump on the road while travelling at top speed and lost control.
He further said, “The car that hit the victims was coming from the Osogbo end. The accident occurred around 6 am on Saturday at Obada market, Odeomu. A private car coming from ran over a motorcycle facing Osogbo. Those on the motorcycle were coming from a vigil and going to Oogi where their house is located.
“Five people were on the motorcycle – a commercial motorcyclist, a woman who sat with two of her children, and the youngest one who was sleeping on her back.
“Immediately the car hit them, the two children that sat in between the motorcyclist and the mother died instantly. The mother and the motorcyclist also died on the spot. The only person that survived is the child that the mother had on her back. Four people died in the accident.”
Angered by the death of the victims, an angry mob descended on the occupants of the vehicle and seized two of them while one escaped from the scene.
“The mob set the vehicle involved ablaze as well as the two occupants that were caught but they didn’t die before the policemen deployed to the scene arrived. They rescued the two of them,” he further said.
The Dean of Students Affairs at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Mr Tope Abiola, said the occupants attacked by the angry mob were students of the institution and called for calm.
When contacted for confirmation, the Osun Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, said, “The vehicle suddenly ran into a bump and lost control. It hit a motorcycle and four people it conveyed reportedly died. The accident involved a car and motorcycle in Obada road, Odeomu.
“The burnt vehicle’s registration number is BDG 481JD (Lagos). The driver escaped immediately when the accident happened. After much appealing to the angry mob, they set ablaze the remaining two occupants of the vehicle. The police were able to quench the fire, rescue the occupants and transfer them to hospital in Osogbo. Normalcy has returned to the area
