The Mexican Embassy in Ghana, in collaboration with Mexico Junior High School (JHS) in Tema Community Two, has launched a six-school football tournament aimed at creating awareness and excitement ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen the long-standing relationship between the Mexican Embassy and Mexico JHS, which has been adopted by the embassy. With Mexico set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, organizers say the tournament is intended to bring the spirit of the world’s biggest football event closer to young Ghanaians.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, a representative of the Mexican Embassy, Karina Garcia, said the competition seeks not only to promote football but also to encourage both boys and girls to participate in sports in a healthy and peaceful environment.
“This is organized to promote sports and to encourage children—not only boys but also girls—to engage in all kinds of sports in a peaceful way and in a healthy environment,” she said.
According to Garcia, sports and education complement each other, with academic studies developing the mind while sports help strengthen the body. She noted that participation in sports equips young people with important values such as discipline, perseverance, teamwork, respect, fairness, courage, and self-control.
“These qualities help us become better students, better friends, and better members of our communities,” she added.
Garcia expressed hope that future editions of the tournament would witness greater female participation and encouraged students to focus on building friendships, learning valuable life lessons, and enjoying the experience rather than concentrating solely on winning trophies and medals.
The tournament features six participating schools:
• Mexico Junior High School
• Community Two No. 4 JHS
• Aggy Road 1 JHS
• Aggy Road 2 JHS
• St. John Bosco Basic School
• Salvation Army Basic School
Beyond promoting sportsmanship, the competition also serves as a platform to rally support for Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Organizers congratulated Ghana on securing qualification and called on citizens to unite behind the national team as preparations begin for the tournament.
“We want to send a message to both the Mexican and Ghanaian national teams and wish them all the best,” Garcia stated.
Mr. Edi, a Mathematics teacher and Head of the Sports Department at Mexico JHS, also urged Ghanaians to throw their full support behind the
