The non-governmental organization Members and Adults Only on Saturday organized a community clean-up exercise at Amankwade in Tema Community 1 as part of activities marking the Ghana National Sanitation Day.

The exercise, held in collaboration with market coordinators and local executives, aimed to improve sanitation and prevent flooding during the upcoming rainy season.

Speaking to reporters, the chairman of the NGO explained that the initiative was motivated by a desire to reduce the negative effects of poor drainage and uncollected waste.

“We are doing this to ensure that the rains do not cause flooding or health problems in our community,” he said.

The Assemblyman for the Kwesi Pratt Electoral Area, Hon. Ahmed Abdulaiah, also spoke on Plan B FM, where he commended the efforts of the volunteers and emphasized the importance of community participation in maintaining a clean environment.

According to Hon. Abdulaiah, the clean-up exercise was not only to beautify the Amankwade station area but also to honor the Mayor for his continuous support of community initiatives. He further expressed concern about practices such as cementing gutters and dumping refuse on walkways, which he said worsen drainage issues.

“When people block gutters and pedestrian routes, it increases the risk of flooding and affects the entire community,” he stated.

A member of Members and Adults Only assured that this would not be a one-time activity but rather part of a routine plan to maintain environmental cleanliness. He also encouraged residents of Tema and Ghanaians in general to cultivate the habit of keeping their surroundings clean for better health and community well-being.

The exercise ended successfully, leaving the Amankwade area visibly cleaner and residents hopeful for a healthier environment.
