Medical Scientist Presses For Investment In Scientific Research

A consultant virologist and senior lecturer at the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences of the University of Ghana, Dr. Alexander Martin-Odoom, has urged government to use Ghana’s COVID-19 battle as a reference point to resource scientific research and enhance the nation’s preparedness against future pandemics.

Speaking to Maxwell Ohene Addo (Nkɔsoɔhene), the host of Plan B FM’s morning show “Nkɔsoɔ Nsɛm”, Dr. Martin-Odoom highlighted the need to address Ghana’s scientific and technical infrastructure deficiency so as to square up to the increasing demand on our already insufficient health resources.

In Ghana there is no resource for scientific research unlike in other developed countries where governments sponsor science projects in efforts to enhance studies in new methods

Alexander Martin-Odoom, Ph.D

Also serving in capacity as the president of the Ghana Association of Private Medical Laboratories, Dr. Martin-Odoom pressed on government to pay closer attention to the nation’s under-funded scientific research laboratories and create an energetic and enabling environment to accelerate Ghana’s advancement with regards to scientific research. Western scientists have been able to detect the mutating nature of the novel viral agent that causes COVID-19 due of the availability of systems and resources for advanced research and findings.
