The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has called on government to employ more non-teaching staff for the schools without any delay.
To mark this years’ May Day celebrations, the General Secretary of TEWU, King James Azortibah expressed sadness that “with the onset of the free Senior High School programme, over one million students have been admitted to senior high schools. This has imposed a lot of challenges on the non-teaching staff in the schools.”
The Union again asked government to speed up in concluding and implementing negotiations on its collective bargaining agreement.
Speaking in an interview with 3news’Daniel Opoku on April 30, 2024, he said of a major concern to TEWU is the nine months arrears of the second-tier pension scheme which it has asked government to remit to the fund managers, while also imploring the Controller and Accountant General to remit dues owed the Union for peaceful industrial climate.
The Union also joined other groupings such as the TUC to call for peace before, during and after the December polls.
May Day 2024, also known as International Workers’ Day, will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 1st, this year. This day is dedicated to recognising the contributions and achievements of workers worldwide and promoting workers’ rights and opportunities
