TDC Ghana Ltd has expressed concern over the demolition of preparatory works at its Community 1, Site 3 Housing Project by officials of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), arguing that the action was taken before the expiry of the deadline given to the company to respond to the Assembly’s concerns.
According to TDC Ghana Ltd, it received an Order to Stop Work and Produce Documents from the TMA on August 7, 2026, concerning preparatory works at the housing project.
The company said the order directed it to stop work and gave it seven days to provide land documentation, Building and Development Permits and a Hoarding Permit, as well as to show cause why the development should not be prohibited or demolished.
However, TDC said that on August 12, officials of the TMA proceeded to the project site and demolished preparatory works that had already been undertaken.
The company described the development as “deeply regrettable”, particularly because the seven-day period granted by the Assembly had not yet expired.
TDC Ghana Ltd said the incident was also unfortunate given the long-standing relationship and institutional cooperation between the company and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies within the Tema Acquisition Area.
It explained that the relationship has historically been based on mutual understanding and recognition of the respective statutory mandates of the institutions, enabling them to collaborate on several government development initiatives.
According to TDC, it has over the years allocated and permitted Assemblies to use its lands for various public and developmental purposes without requiring payment of ground rent, land management fees and related land administration charges.
The company said these arrangements were based on the understanding that, despite their separate statutory responsibilities, both institutions are public entities working towards orderly development and the public interest.
TDC therefore believes that disputes between public institutions, particularly over a government housing project, should be resolved through consultation and constructive engagement rather than actions that could disrupt government’s development agenda.
The company also disclosed that the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Eric Asamoah Asiedu, has intervened in the matter following the developments at the project site.
TDC said the Regional Police Commander met with its management as part of efforts to maintain peace, security and public order within the metropolis.
According to the company, the Regional Police Commander assured management of the Police Service’s commitment to protecting peace and security and indicated that efforts would be made to facilitate an amicable resolution.
TDC Ghana Ltd welcomed the intervention and said it remains committed to resolving the matter responsibly, peacefully and through the appropriate institutional channels.
The company further emphasised that the Community 1, Site 3 Housing Project forms part of its contribution to the government’s priority of increasing housing delivery and addressing Ghana’s housing deficit.
TDC said it remains focused on ensuring that the housing project proceeds in line with the appropriate institutional and legal processes.
