Mr. Matthew Kitcher has criticised the governing NDC over its handling of the LGBTQ+ bill, arguing that the party failed to follow constitutional procedures in Parliament.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen programme hosted by Ohene Kennah, Mr. Kitcher claimed that Article 104(1) of the 1992 Constitution was breached because fewer than half of the Members of Parliament participated in the vote on the bill.
According to him, the number of parliamentarians involved in the voting process did not constitute the required majority, raising concerns about the legitimacy of the proceedings.
Mr. Kitcher also questioned the decision to review and amend portions of the bill before its consideration for assent. He argued that such revisions were unnecessary and expressed concern over what he described as delays in the process.
He further stated that he was disappointed that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo did not assent to the bill during his tenure, although he acknowledged that the reasons behind that decision were not publicly known.
Touching on the broader political landscape, Mr. Kitcher said both the NDC and NPP have failed to adequately address issues concerning the LGBTQ+ bill and other national concerns. He urged Ghanaians to consider supporting alternative political forces, insisting that the two major parties have not delivered on many of their promises.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Kitcher called on President John Dramani Mahama to protect his legacy by assenting to the original version of the bill without further amendments. He also urged Parliament to ensure that any future voting process complies fully with the provisions of the Constitution.
