The government has commenced land preparation for the construction of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
According to the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s efforts to expand and modernise Ghana’s health infrastructure.
The new facility is expected to replace the hospital’s existing maternity unit, which has been described as deteriorated and in need of replacement.
The proposed Mother and Child Block will provide a range of specialised services, including Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
It will also house an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, breastfeeding and family planning units, as well as an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.
Other planned facilities include diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, blood bank facilities, a pharmacy, Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), physiotherapy and rehabilitation units.
The project will also incorporate facilities for teaching, research and conferences, strengthening Korle Bu’s role as a major centre for specialist healthcare and medical training.
