Komfo Anokye Hospital Doctors Threaten Strike Over Bungalows Eviction Notice

KATH Doctors Postpone Intended Strike To Feb 4

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have threatened to abandon their posts following the release of their bungalow lands to private developers.

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has reportedly given them a one-week ultimatum to vacate the bungalows which have purportedly been sold to private developers.

The Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo speaking to the media said the doctors are currently in a meeting to address the issue.

He said the outcome of the meeting would direct their next course of action.

“You will notice that a lot of our staff live 15 to 20 minutes away from the hospital and all of a sudden, people will come and ask you to move from your place because it has been sold to them and we took that issue up and we met with Manhyia on it and it was agreed that a new place be prepared to move us there before you can take possession of the land.

“They have disregarded that with impunity and so we are meeting this morning. We will all leave the hospital to go and look for accommodation because we don’t have a place to sleep,” he said.

The occupants of the said bungalows were served eviction notices in April 2023, following the release of the lands to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Meanwhile, the ARCC says it is relocating all government workers, including the doctors within an enclave of state lands around Danyame and Nhyiaeso, which have been ceded to the Manhyia Palace.

The Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah said that new facilities are being constructed for the affected workers.

He refuted claims of forceful eviction and assured that the whole process was aimed at improving working conditions for the government workers.
