Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has joined Sheffield United on a one-year contract after completing his move to the Championship club as a free agent.
The 34-year-old striker joins Chris Wilder’s squad immediately after his contract with Leicester City expired at the end of last season, with Sheffield United completing the signing to fill the final place in their 25-man squad.
Ayew arrives with extensive international and club experience, having featured in more than 500 competitive matches during a career that has taken him across France and England.
The Ghana international spent last season with Leicester City and was a regular at international level, starting all four of Ghana’s matches at the World Cup as the Black Stars reached the knockout stages. He also featured in the goalless draw against England.
Wilder believes Ayew’s experience and versatility will give Sheffield United additional options in attack as they look to mount a strong Championship campaign.
“I spoke last week about being close to getting someone in from the free agent market and things did move quite quickly, so I am really pleased to have Jordan with us,” Wilder said.
“We’re talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game. Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he’s someone with real pedigree.”
The Sheffield United boss also pointed to Ayew’s experience in the Championship and his ability to operate across the forward line.
“He did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances and has played all across the front positions during his career which gives us plenty of options,” he added.
Wilder also drew comparisons with the club’s previous successful free-agent additions, including Pat Bamford and Jaïro Riedewald.
Ayew said he was delighted with how quickly the move was completed and is eager to make an impact at his new club.
“I didn’t think twice, I just took the opportunity, and the most important thing is for me to help the team and obviously for us to have a great season,” he said.
The veteran forward began his senior career with Marseille and has also represented Sochaux and Lorient in France before establishing himself in English football with Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
His arrival gives Wilder another experienced attacking option as Sheffield United target a successful season in the Championship.
