A member of the communication team of the New Patriotic Party in the Tema West Constituency, James Tamakloe, has advised citizens to follow the appropriate procedures in acquiring building permits before putting up structures and properties.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem on Plan B FM, hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Tamakloe stressed that adherence to proper building regulations would help reduce the persistent flooding situation, especially in areas where people construct buildings on waterways and wetlands.
According to him, many of the flooding challenges confronting parts of the country stem from indiscriminate construction and the failure of some citizens to obtain the necessary approvals before building.
He also cautioned the public against relying on middlemen, popularly known as “goro boys,” to acquire permits, insisting that individuals should personally follow the official processes to avoid irregularities and unlawful developments.
Tamakloe’s comments come on the back of concerns raised by Abdulai Mahama over the increasing rate of illegal structures on waterways as Ghana enters the peak of the rainy season.
Speaking on Citi News Digest, Ing. Mahama called on government to take decisive action against illegal developments obstructing natural watercourses.
“The government has to crack the whip. That’s it,” he stated.
According to him, the continued encroachment on waterways and wetlands remains one of the major causes of flooding in urban centres, particularly in Accra.
He argued that structures obstructing waterways must be demolished regardless of who owns them, stressing the need for authorities to enforce planning regulations without fear or favour.
