Interior Ministry condemns assault of suspect in police custody

Interior Ministry condemns assault of suspect in police custody
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Ministry of the Interior has condemned the assault of an arrested person while in police custody, describing the circumstances surrounding the incident as a matter of serious concern.

The Ministry said it was particularly concerned that the incident occurred against the backdrop of statements attributed to individuals on both sides of a religious dispute, including calls for violence against persons accused of offending religious sensibilities.

It has therefore unequivocally condemned all forms of religious incitement, stressing that there is no justification for violence against Christians, Muslims or anyone else on the basis of religion.

The Ministry also emphasised that regardless of the seriousness of any alleged offence, no person has the right to assault a suspect in police custody.

According to the Ministry, an arrested person is in the custody of the State and is entitled to the full protection of the law.

In response to the incident, the Minister for the Interior has directed the Inspector-General of Police to investigate how civilians gained access to the person in custody and identify any police personnel who may have facilitated, permitted or acquiesced in the breach.

The IGP has also been directed to take appropriate disciplinary action against any police officer found culpable.

Additionally, the Police have been instructed to identify, arrest and investigate the civilian persons involved in the assault in accordance with the law.

The Minister has further ordered an investigation into the conduct of all supervising officers responsible for the custody and supervision of the persons involved, with disciplinary action to be taken against those found culpable.

The Ministry has directed the Police to deal with all persons arrested in connection with the preceding incidents strictly in accordance with the law and without fear or favour.

The Ministry reiterated that religious incitement, religious violence and the unlawful assault of persons in custody have no place in Ghana, stressing that no religious belief, personal grievance or other consideration places anyone above the law.

It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public order, protecting the rights of persons in custody and promoting peaceful coexistence among citizens of all faiths and backgrounds.
