“I have lost respect in Ghana after the NPP exploited me and my popularity to obtain votes for them – Asamoah Gyan

“I have lost respect in Ghana after the NPP exploited me and my popularity to obtain votes for them – Asamoah Gyan

Former skipper of the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan has recounted with regret, how the soon to be gone government the New Patriotic Party capitalized on his popularity to canvass for votes during the December 7 general elections last year.

In February 2024, just weeks after Gyan was spotted at the NPP Presidential Candidate and Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign launch, the 2010 BBC African Footballer of Year was named chairman of Bawumia’s Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee.

However in a twist of events, the 38-year-old Gyan said his actions have not been fair to the Ghanaian youth, and he will no longer be participating in partizan work going forward.

“I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth I am not affiliated to any political party.

“I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political”

“I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on the December 7 elections. God bless our homeland Ghana”

Thank you,” Gyan posted alongside the statemen on X.

Gyan in an Instagram live session on January 2, 2025 has said the NPP rather used his name and popularity for votes—something that has caused him respect in Ghana.

“NPP used me and my popularity to get people to vote for them and I have lost respect in Ghana” , he said.

In the said elections, New Patriotic Party lost decisively amassing 4,735,687 representing 41.4% to John Dramani Mahama’s National Democratic Congress‘ 6,499,082 representing 56.8% in the presidential race.
