The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, says government has begun an exercise to assign streets in major capital cities to private businesses for reconstruction, redevelopment and maintenance.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 5, 2026, Mr. Ayariga said the initiative, being undertaken under the direction of President John Dramani Mahama, would involve banks, manufacturing companies, construction firms, logistics companies and insurance companies.
He said the private businesses would take responsibility for improving and maintaining the streets assigned to them, including street lighting, greenery and safe walkways.
“Under the direction of President Mahama, we have commenced an exercise to assign all streets in our major capital cities to private businesses,” Mr. Ayariga said.
He explained that the arrangement could allow companies to have their names associated with streets while retaining the names of existing personalities.
Mr. Ayariga cited the Obasanjo Highway as an example, saying a company such as Access Bank could be given responsibility for redeveloping and maintaining the road.
“So we would add Access Bank Obasanjo Highway and then give Access Bank the mandate to redevelop the street, make sure that it is maintained, make sure that it is lit, make sure that there is adequate greenery and make sure that the walkways are always paved and safe,” he said.
The Minister said the government was engaging financial institutions and other private businesses to support the initiative.
He added that the programme would be rolled out in the coming days and weeks as part of efforts to improve infrastructure in urban communities.
