Gov’t issues travel advisory on mandatory health declaration for travellers to Sierra Leone

Return Diplomatic Passports by March 17 or face blacklisting – Foreign Affairs Ministry warns

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the Government of Sierra Leone has introduced a mandatory health declaration process for all travellers entering or departing the country.

According to a travel advisory issued on July 7, 2026, the new requirement took effect on June 18, 2026, and applies to all travellers, including Ghanaian citizens, foreign nationals, returning residents, and visitors travelling to or from Sierra Leone.

The Ministry is, therefore, advising Ghanaians planning to visit Sierra Leone to complete the online Health Declaration Form through the Sierra Leone Health Travel Portal at https://poep.npha.gov.sl within 72 hours before their journey.

Travellers are also required to provide their correct and updated seat numbers before departure and retain the confirmation QR Code or Reference Number generated after submission for presentation to relevant authorities when requested.

The Sierra Leonean authorities have cautioned that providing false, inaccurate, or misleading information could result in delays, denial of entry or departure clearance, or additional health screening procedures.

They further urged travellers who feel unwell before, during, or after their journey to immediately report to a Point of Entry Health Officer and seek medical attention.

The information collected through the portal will be used to support disease surveillance, prevention, and public health security measures and will be handled confidentially in accordance with applicable data protection requirements.

Travellers arriving in Sierra Leone may also be subjected to health screening and other public health measures deemed necessary by authorities and are expected to cooperate fully with health officials throughout their journey.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs encouraged all travellers to complete the online declaration before departure to avoid delays and ensure compliance with Sierra Leone’s public health regulations.
