President John Dramani Mahama says the government has reclaimed some public lands after reviewing questionable land transactions as part of efforts to strengthen accountability in the management of state assets.
According to the President, the government has also halted the processing of titles relating to certain uncompleted land allocations to prevent the improper disposal of public property.
“Government is determined to end the indiscriminate and undervalued disposal of public lands to politically exposed persons and other influential individuals,” He said.
He stressed that public property must be managed transparently, insisting that state lands should not be allocated arbitrarily or transferred through opaque arrangements.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, July 21, he reiterated government’s plan to introduce legislation to strengthen oversight of the disposal of public lands and other state assets.
“Government is also preparing legislation to ensure that the disposal of public lands and other state assets is subject to clear, transparent legal procedures and prior approval by Parliament,” he added.
The President’s remarks came as members of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, led by the President, Prof. Odaifio Welentsi III, raised concerns over the protection of public lands, calling for their inclusion in the Greater Accra Public Lands Protection Taskforce established by the sector Minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, to safeguard state lands in the region.
