The Government of Ghana is set to introduce a contra-flow traffic arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major corridors leading into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD).
The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, will take effect from Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and is aimed at improving public transportation and easing congestion during peak hours.
The arrangement will operate during the morning peak period from 6:00am to 9:00am and in the evening from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.
The three corridors initially covered are:
- Amasaman–Accra
- Adenta–Accra
- Kasoa–Accra
According to the Ministry, selected sections of the corridors will be temporarily configured to allow authorised Ayalolo BRT buses to travel in the priority direction against the normal flow of general traffic.
Private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be allowed to use the designated BRT contra-flow lanes.
The intervention is being implemented in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR).
The Government says the arrangement is expected to improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo services, reduce journey times, ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD and encourage greater use of mass public transportation.
It is also expected to reduce pressure from the large volume of private vehicles and improve overall urban mobility within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
The MTTD will provide traffic control and enforcement support at strategic locations and major intersections along the affected corridors.
The Ministry has therefore urged motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses and residents along the affected routes to cooperate with traffic officers and comply with the new arrangement.
Management of Ayalolo BRT is also scheduled to hold a press briefing on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 10:00am to provide further details on the implementation.
The Government says it will continue engaging transport operators, road users, local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the intervention achieves its objectives while maintaining road safety.
