The government has reviewed restrictions on motorbike riding in the Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region, allowing residents to ride between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily.
The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, announced the decision in a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026.
According to the Minister, the decision was taken on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, and will take effect from Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
Under the revised arrangement, both men and women will be permitted to ride motorbikes within the specified hours.
However, the existing curfew remains in force, with restrictions running from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The government has also maintained a total ban on the possession and carrying of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons by all persons within Bawku Municipality and its environs.
The Interior Ministry warned that anyone found in possession of arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
Government has meanwhile appealed to Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, the youth and residents of Bawku to exercise restraint amid the challenges confronting the area.
It urged all stakeholders to resort to non-violent means in addressing their concerns and to contribute towards restoring and maintaining peace in the municipality.
