The Government of Ghana has postponed the planned evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa following the latest wave of xenophobic attacks in the country.
In a press release issued on May 21, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that more than 800 Ghanaians have registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria requesting evacuation.
According to the Ministry, the exercise, which was scheduled to begin today, has been deferred by a few days due to legal and logistical requirements by South African authorities. These include mandatory passenger screening, multi-agency coordination, and the acquisition of flight permits.
The statement added that Ghanaian and South African authorities have agreed on enhanced pre-evacuation arrangements to speed up the process and ensure a smooth operation.
The Government assured Ghanaians living in South Africa that efforts are underway to guarantee their safe return home while senior officials from both countries continue engagements on the matter.
The Ministry also commended affected Ghanaians for their patience and understanding, promising to keep the public updated in a transparent and timely manner.
