Galamsey Fight: Government Taskforce takes Ghc 5,000 from us – ‘Galamseyers’

A/R: NPP Office Closed Down, Landlord Seizes Property
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The issue of galamsey has become topical again following several reports of  persistent destruction of water  bodies in the country due to the unchecked activities of illegal mining.

Reacting to the government’s claim that all the needed power and tools have been provided to deal with persons engaged in galamsey, George Arthur, a 36 – year – old illegal miner  lamented how the ruling government has failed in the fight against the galamsey menace.

Speaking in an interview with Ohene Kinnah on ‘Ebaanosen’ Plan B FM ‘s current affairs show, George Arthur further stated that it’s hypocritical for politicians to dance around the issues of galamsey and try to justify or apportion blame to one another over whose government has caused more harm on the activities of galamsey.

“We usually give an amount of Ghc 2,000, 3,000 and Ghc 5,000 to the taskforce (security agencies) government deployed to fight the galamsey for us to be allowed to do illegal mining”.

George Arthur has publicly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and then National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for worsening the illegal mining crisis, commonly known as Galamsey.

According to him, both government’s ineffectiveness in tackling the issue has led to a resurgence of illegal mining activities, which have severely polluted water bodies and resulted in widespread deforestation.

“President Akufo Addo and his government have left the nation down, with respect to protecting the nation’s environment and natural resources”, he said.

Government needs to cure this canker in order to end these equalization”, he noted.
