Former Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Freddie Blay in a recent interview on GTV Breakfast show, proposed a significant increase in the number of ministerial positions within the government, suggesting that the current cap of 60 ministers should be raised to between 90 and 100.
Mr. Blay remarked that the limited number of ministerial roles creates envy among Members of Parliament (MPs), potentially leading to political unrest and discontent within the party ranks.
He further emphasized the importance of distributing ministerial roles more evenly across the various regions and among the numerous MPs in Parliament. He warned that failing to do so could result in a sense of rebellion among those who feel overlooked or marginalized by the current administration.
“We need to go behind 60 and go to maybe 90 or 100, so that you spread it among the regions,” he stated.
The former NPP chairman elaborated on the implications of this envy, noting that MPs who do not secure ministerial positions might become disillusioned with the party. This discontent could lead to a shift in loyalty, with some members potentially aligning themselves with the opposition.
“If you are not careful, they may themselves turn into opposition, join the opposition, to be attacking you,” Blay cautioned, underscoring the delicate balance that must be maintained within the party to ensure unity and stability.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Blay’s proposals might be looked at on the optimal number of ministers needed to effectively govern the country.
