The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as false and misleading claims circulating on social media regarding Ghana’s efforts to seek justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under unusual circumstances while studying at Riga Technical University in Latvia.
In a statement dated February 2, 2026, the Ministry said a viral video, in which a woman claiming to be the deceased’s sister made several allegations against government officials, contained “unfounded assertions” that do not reflect the facts.
The Ministry refuted claims that the deceased’s mother was asked to make payments to facilitate her travel to Latvia, that government officials travelled without any family member, and that a fake airline ticket was issued to the family.
According to the statement, the Ministry has maintained constant and transparent engagement with the family, facilitating arrangements for two duly nominated family members and a pathologist to travel to Latvia. It stressed that at no point was any payment demanded or received from the family, adding that the Government of Ghana is bearing the full cost of all travel-related expenses.
The Ministry explained that the family members were initially scheduled to travel by January 31, 2026, but the trip was delayed due to visa issuance challenges. It noted that during their visa appointments, the nominated family members failed to present all required documents, leading to delays by the relevant authorities.
Once the outstanding documents were submitted, the Ministry said it promptly forwarded them to the appropriate embassy. It further disclosed that the deceased’s mother was officially informed on Friday evening and again on Saturday that travel could not proceed because the visas had not been issued and the passports were still with the embassy.
Despite this, the Ministry stated that the mother later went to the airport with bloggers, despite being informed that the document in her possession was not a confirmed airline ticket but an itinerary generated solely to support the visa application process.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry said it remains actively engaged with the relevant authorities to secure the outstanding visas and described the circulation of misinformation on the matter as deeply regrettable.
It reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and to pursuing justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia.
