The May 9, 2021 planned protest by convenors of #FixTheCountry will not take place as the Ghana Police Service has secured a restraining order from a High Court to stop the group from embarking on the protest.
The order which was granted by Justice Ruby Aryeetey prevents the group from embarking their planned protest on the said day or any other date until the restriction on public gathering is lifted.
The Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Region Police Command explains that the restraining order from the court follows an affidavit filed by the police against convenors of TheFixCountry protest march pursuant to Section 1(6) of the Police Order Act, 1994 (491).
“The Accra Regional Police Command is hereby drawing the attention of the general public especially organisers or conveners of FixTheCountry protest march, their associates, officers, agents, assigns and workmen, to the restriction order and compliance,” a statement from the police noted.
Background
A lot of Ghanaian social media users largely the youth recently took to a social media platform, Twitter to express their displeasures over happenings in the country. A hashtag #FixTheCountry was subsequently created to push for their demands.
The trend suddenly caught the attention some more youth who joined the campaign on social media demanding from government what they refer to as improved conditions of living.
The group had indicated their intent to go a march to protest against the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government highlighting some inadequacies in the country.
The government, in response to the group’s claims that it has done very little to improve the living standard of Ghanaians since taking over from the previous regime, has instituted the Nation Builders’ Corp (NABCO), National Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) and other commitments towards investing in the growing human capital.
The group however think otherwise and said they hardly feel the impact the policies government say it has implemented.
