ADOI Richmond Asamoah Frimpong has stressed the importance of proper installation, regular maintenance and correct use of fire extinguishers in protecting lives and minimising property damage during fire emergencies.
Speaking on Nyansapo Fie, Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, he explained that fire extinguishers are portable devices designed to control or extinguish fires in their early stages.
He identified the various types of fire extinguishers, including water, carbon dioxide (CO₂), dry chemical powder and wet chemical extinguishers, noting that the appropriate type depends on the class of fire.
ADOI Frimpong also educated listeners on the PASS technique for operating a fire extinguisher: Pull the safety pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle and Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
He urged institutions and organisations to ensure that fire extinguishers are properly mounted, clearly visible and easily accessible. He further emphasised the need for regular inspections to identify damage or leakage, as well as timely servicing in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and applicable safety requirements.
According to him, properly maintained fire extinguishers can strengthen workplace fire safety, limit property damage and help save lives.
He further urged the public to contact the Ghana National Fire Service promptly whenever a fire breaks out.
However, he cautioned that people should only attempt to extinguish a fire when it is safe to do so and a clear escape route is available.
