Finding hope in helplessness: Expert advice on overcoming life’s challenges

Don’t just wait, plant! – Lady counsellor’s advice

Feeling helpless can be a debilitating experience, leaving individuals feeling overwhelmed and lost. Recently, Lady Elizabeth Kesewaa Nortey, Creative Director of Kess Millinery and Beads, shared her insights on coping with helplessness during an interview with hostess Nana Asabea on Plan B FM’s social and lifestyle programme, ‘Nyansapɔ Fie’.

“As human beings, we are all bound to experience helplessness at some point,” Lady Kess explained. “Those who have not yet faced it should prepare themselves by knowing what to do and who to turn to, as helplessness can occur in phases depending on one’s circumstances and available information.”

Lady Kess emphasised the importance of remaining calm and trusting in God during times of helplessness. “Fortunately, the remedy for helplessness is within our reach, but owing to mental fogginess and emotional impulsiveness, we often overlook it,” she noted.

To overcome helplessness, Lady Kess advised taking a break from stressful situations and engaging in activities that bring joy. “Relax, take a break from what you are doing, and free your mind,” she suggested. “Engage in activities that bring you joy, such as enjoying your favourite food or hobby. This helps avoid burnout and other related issues.”

Reverend Michael Yaao Banson, Resident Pastor of The Rehoboth Holyfire Revival Ministries International, shared a poignant illustration of a mother who lost her eight-year-old son, highlighting the devastating impact of helplessness. Reverend Banson referenced 1 Samuel 30:6, where King David encouraged himself in the Lord despite facing grief and anger from his people.

“Some situations are unbearable and others uncontrollable, exceeding human strength and control,” Reverend Banson emphasised. “Our foundation must be rooted in a state of mind that relies solely on God, not material things.”

Reverend Banson encouraged individuals to count their trials as joy, as these moments refine them and teach them to depend on God alone. “As we navigate these challenges, we develop a deeper listening ear for God’s guidance, emerging as better versions of ourselves,” he concluded.

Senior Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev Dr Christiana Otoo Lartey, added that encountering helplessness can be particularly challenging when death is involved, especially for those who do not know God as their Saviour or Redeemer. “You require encouragement from others when experiencing helplessness, as it is an inevitable part of life,” she said.

Rev Dr Otoo Lartey emphasised the importance of having a ‘Plan B’ to avoid frustration and encouraged individuals to seek encouragement through the Word of God when facing helplessness.

In conclusion, the experts agreed that helplessness is an inevitable part of life, but with the right mindset, support, and trust in God, individuals can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
