A Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. George Asabre, is calling for greater accountability from the Electoral Commission of Ghana over what he describes as persistent electoral irregularities.
Speaking on Nkɔsɔsem on Plan B FM, Mr. Asabre questioned the Commission’s handling of key electoral processes in recent years, arguing that unresolved concerns continue to erode public confidence in Ghana’s democratic system.
He cited the disenfranchisement of voters in Santrofie, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe during the 2020 general election, claiming affected communities were denied their constitutional right to vote despite raising concerns. He also referenced security incidents during the 2020 polls that resulted in fatalities, insisting that accountability should not be limited to the Interior and Defence Ministries alone.
According to him, the declaration and subsequent corrections of the 2020 presidential results created uncertainty and weakened trust in the electoral process.
Mr. Asabre further pointed to the 2022/2023 limited voter registration exercise, alleging discrepancies in figures announced in Kumasi. He claimed that numbers initially communicated were later revised after the NDC challenged them.
He cautioned that unless such issues are addressed decisively ahead of the 2024 general election, they could heighten political tensions.
The Electoral Commission has yet to officially respond to the claims.
