Mr. Vincent Ayertey Odonkor, President of the Automotive Dealers and Importers Association, has threatened a “massive demonstration” if President John Mahama fails to intervene in the operations of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
Speaking on Abaano Sen, an evening programme on Plan B FM, Mr. Odonkor alleged that the DVLA is selling vehicle number plates intended for drivers at inflated prices instead of making them available to commercial operators.
He claimed that DVLA plates, which should cost 450 Ghana cedis, are being sold for between 1,700 and 1,800 cedis. He described the situation as unacceptable, stating that drivers “should not be begging for DVLA plates.”
Mr. Odonkor further alleged that only one company is currently responsible for the production and distribution of DVLA plates in Ghana, raising concerns about possible monopolistic practices.
He warned that unless the President directly engages the DVLA to address the concerns, drivers across the country are prepared to mobilize in protest.
The DVLA has yet to respond to the allegations.
