Don’t sit on our money to break any 8 – TEWU warns gov’t

Don’t sit on our money to break any 8 – TEWU warns gov’t

The Upper East Regional Industrial Relations Officer for the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), Mr. Abeaba Matthew Abereniya, has cautioned government against using funds meant for labour unions to engage in programmes and activities to achieve their political ambitions.

According to him, the intentions of the New Patriotic Party to break the eight-year rule in government should not be dependent on the contributions of the ordinary worker.

“The plight of the worker should be your topmost concern. Mr. Minister, if you want to break your eight, then you must mould it well; make it look attractive before you can break it. So you have to take note of that.”

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) joined other labour unions to celebrate 2024 Workers Day at Paga in the Kasena Nanakana West District in the Upper East Region.

The labour unions re-echoed that many Ghanaian workers still suffer injustice in disputes with their employers. They were sad that they are paid very low wages but pay higher utility bills, among other things. When Mr. Abeaba Matthew took the microphone to announce the next speaker, he told the Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, to take note:

“You cannot sit on our money to break any 8. Minister, you have to take note of that. Because when people are hungry, they will not give you their attention.”

The 2024 May Day Celebration was observed on the theme “Election 2024: The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development.”
