Don Winans, a regional communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has highlighted the more than decade-long development of Ghana’s automated traffic enforcement project, Traffitech-GH, tracing its journey from conceptualisation to its planned nationwide rollout.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuonsem, hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi, Winans outlined key stages in the project’s development, including its initial planning, pilot programme and the establishment of a legal framework to support automated traffic enforcement.

He said that in 2018, under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, GH¢335,000 was committed to a three-year pilot programme.

According to Winans, the pilot phase began in 2022, and by 2023, the programme in the Ashanti Region had reportedly issued 120,000 warning notices to motorists who violated traffic regulations.

He also cited the passage of the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1153), as a significant milestone in the development of the project.

Winans further pointed to October 1, 2026, as the scheduled commencement date for Traffitech-GH, an automated traffic enforcement system designed to improve compliance with road traffic regulations.

He identified Nationwide Traffic Management and Enforcement Limited (NTMEL) and Swedish traffic-safety technology company Sensys Gatso as the companies involved in the project through a joint venture supporting the development and operation of the system.

Reflecting on the timeline, Winans said the project’s journey spanned more than ten years, encompassing its conceptualisation, pilot implementation and preparations for nationwide deployment.

He maintained that the history of Traffitech-GH should be considered when assessing its progress, arguing that the initiative had undergone years of planning and development before reaching its intended implementation stage.
