A Senior Lecturer at the department of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School, Legon, Professor Lord Mensah says digitization of government process and operations remain key winning to the anti-corruption war of government.
His call comes after the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at a public lecture on Tuesday, assessed the impact of the government’s digitization drive at key government institutions and announced new initiatives such as the provision of Ghana cards at birth, a platform to access drugs, among other things.
Speaking on Plan B FM ‘Nkosuo Nsem’ with Ohene Addo Prof. Mensah said a digitized economy will curb corruption and also ensure that nobody will have monopoly of power to compromise, and do things at their discretion once the process is being automated.
“An economy that relies heavily on cash transactions breeds corruption. Digitization and the introduction of electronic systems of payment minimizes corruption because all business transactions are being traced and moniterd. So it’s very important we digitize our economy to democratize government service delivery thereby ensuring accountability, because records are being kept and can be checked at any time needed”, he stated
He also indicated that, for the government’s digitization agenda to be complete there is the need to provide jobs and businesses for the citizenry.
He added that, the government must be proactive in it revenue collection so the country can feel the impact of digitization.
He believes digitization gives instant access to data and that becomes imperative to digitize the economy.
