The Bishop of the Koforidua Diocese of the Catholic Church, Most Rev. Joseph Kweku Afrifa Agyekum, has strongly dismissed claims by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) that it has not promoted LGBTQ-related content in Ghana’s education system, describing the assertion as “false and misleading.”
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, the Bishop argued that curriculum authorities cannot feign ignorance over the content of instructional materials approved for use in schools.
“It is not true for NaCCA to suggest they are unaware of what is contained in books used in our schools,” he said. “Every approved material goes through careful reading, review and assessment before it is released for public use.”
According to him, the denial by National Council for Curriculum and Assessment does not reflect how curriculum development and approval processes work, noting that education managers are fully responsible for the content that eventually reaches learners.
The Bishop, however, acknowledged the complexity of the situation, explaining that while many educational materials are currently in circulation, it may be difficult to immediately establish how many contain inappropriate content or how many can practically be withdrawn after approval.
“There are many books out there, and it may not even be clear how many can genuinely be withdrawn,” he noted, “but that does not mean the issue should be ignored.”
Most Rev. Afrifa Agyekum warned that the matter requires urgent attention, stressing that the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference is deeply dissatisfied with what it sees as a lack of transparency in curriculum oversight.
He cautioned that continued inaction or silence by NaCCA and the relevant ministries could force the Church to escalate its response by protesting.
“If they block their ears to these concerns, we will take stronger public action to show how serious we are,” he said.
The Bishop called for open engagement with faith-based institutions and other stakeholders to ensure that Ghana’s educational content aligns with the country’s cultural values and moral standards.
