A total of 155 candidates from Ghana’s 16 regions have filed nominations to contest in the Council of State elections, set to take place today, February 11.
The elections, a key element of Ghana’s governance system, will determine regional representatives who will advise President John Dramani Mahama on critical national issues.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC), the candidates comprise 145 men and 10 women, reflecting a significant gender disparity.
However, the participation of female candidates signals gradual progress in increasing women’s representation in national decision-making.
To qualify for the elections, candidates had to meet the EC’s eligibility requirements, including proof of Ghanaian citizenship, good standing in society, and compliance with all administrative conditions before the nomination deadline.
Unlike presidential and parliamentary elections, the Council of State elections do not involve direct public voting.
Instead, they follow an Electoral College system, where representatives from each district serve as electors.
Each of Ghana’s 261 District Assemblies nominates two representatives, who then vote to select the final regional representatives.
The electors play a crucial role in ensuring a transparent and merit-based selection process, assessing candidates based on their experience, expertise, and ability to contribute to national governance.
Established under Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, the Council of State is a constitutionally mandated advisory body that provides guidance to the President on policy formulation and governance.
It offers expert recommendations on matters such as national security, economic development, and other key state affairs.
With the elections underway, stakeholders anticipate a selection process that will strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions and enhance governance at the highest level.
