John Ato Breboh, Deputy Chief Investigator at the Tema Sub-Regional Office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has cautioned against the dangers of gambling, citing its devastating impact on finances, families, and lives.
Speaking to Nana Asabea, host of Plan B FM’s social and lifestyle programme, “Nyansapɔ Fie”, he highlighted the severe consequences of gambling addiction, including financial instability, social isolation, and legal issues.
Under Ghanaian law, certain forms of gambling are regulated or prohibited. For instance:
1. The Gaming Act, 1960 (Act 79) regulates gaming activities, including licensing requirements and penalties for unauthorised gaming.
2. The National Lottery Act, 2006 (Act 722) governs lottery activities, with penalties for unauthorised lottery operations.
Punishments for violating these laws include fines and imprisonment. CHRAJ urges Ghanaians to avoid gambling and its associated risks.
Types of gambling with potential risks include:
1. Betting (sports, games)
2. Wagering (casinos, games)
3. Lotteries
In conclusion, CHRAJ implores Ghanaians to prioritise their well-being and make informed decisions to avoid the dangers of gambling.
