CHRAJ Investigator Cites Constitution, Calls for State of Emergency Over Galamsey Menace

CHRAJ Warns CEOs Against Unfair Dismissals Driven by Self-Centeredness

John Ato Breboh, Deputy Chief Investigator at the Tema Sub-Regional Office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has cited Articles 36(8) and 36(9) of the 1992 Ghanaian Constitution and called for a state of emergency to be declared over the galamsey menace.

In an interview with Odiamono Kwaku Gyimah on Plan B FM’s social and lifestyle programme, “Nyansapɔ Fie”, Uncle Ato, as he is affectionately known, said the laws, which emphasise the social obligation of land ownership and the state’s responsibility to protect the environment, necessitate government action.

”As enshrined in Article 36(9) of the Constitution of Ghana, the State is mandated to take appropriate measures to protect and safeguard the national environment for posterity and to seek cooperation with other nations. However, successive governments have been making excuses to cover their underperformance, which is unacceptable,” he said.
